(OTONABEE-SOUTH MONAGHAN TOWNSHIP, ON) - Members of the Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a distraction break & enter / theft that took place at a local farmer’s market.
On Thursday September 25, 2025, a Peterborough County OPP officer was dispatched to a report of a break & enter / theft at an address on County Road 2 in the township of Otonabee-South Monaghan. The caller advised that they run a farm, and on their property, they also run a small farmer’s market selling local produce.
Officers attended and spoke with the complainant who advised that at approximately 4:45pm, they observed a dark coloured vehicle pull up and three males exited the vehicle entering the market. The males were all described as being between five foot four inches and six feet tall, all with beards, and appeared to be of middle eastern descent. The complainant noted the vehicle as a hatch style that had no front licence plate and was not able recognize the brand by the hood badge.
A family member was within the house, a short distance from the market, when they heard loud banging at the door. They went to the door and found one of the individuals who told them they needed to assist at the market. The family member attended the market only to find everything in order. They attempted to return to the house but were stopped by questions from the individuals. Moments later, the individuals returned to the vehicle which left the property at a high rate of speed.
A short while later, another family member arrived home and found that a bedroom in the house had been entered, and some jewelry had been taken. They noted that drawers had been rummaged through and left open with items being left out of sort. At this point they contacted the OPP.
