DRUG SEIZURE AND CHARGES LAID AFTER TRAFFIC STOP


(ATIKOKAN, ON) - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Atikokan arrested two people after drugs were discovered during a proactive traffic stop.  

On June 24, 2025, at approximately 1:30 pm, an officer with the Atikokan Detachment OPP conducted a traffic stop to check document compliance. The officer found one of the vehicle passengers violating a court ordered prohibition. The passenger was arrested, and the vehicle was searched.      

The vehicle search resulted in the discovery of a small quantity of suspected cocaine and other trafficking related paraphernalia which resulted in a second arrest.

Rodney William BENJAMIN, 40-years-old from Atikokan is charged criminally with one count of possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition and one count of fail to comply with probation. The accused was held by police and has a bail hearing scheduled for June 30, 2025, in the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice.

Heather Christine SMITH, 34-years-old from Atikokan is charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance (Schedule I cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of unmarked cigarettes. This accused was released by police and has a first appearance scheduled for July 31, 2025, in the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice.
