FRAUD INVESTIGATION PROMPTS WARNING TO RESIDENTS

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) - The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a significant fraud case after a local resident reported losing over $350,000 to an elaborate scam.

On December 18, 2025, police responded to a report from a victim who had been contacted by an individual offering assistance with early retirement. The victim was persuaded to send multiple payments, including cash and international transfers, under the promise of receiving a larger return. The fraud involved communication through various online platforms and requests for additional funds to cover taxes and security deposits.

This case highlights the complexity of modern fraud schemes, which often involve:

  • Social engineering tactics such as building trust through messaging apps
  • Requests for upfront payments to unlock supposed investments or benefits
