OPP WARN ABOUT “DOOR-KICK CHALLENGE” TREND, CRIMINAL CHARGES POSSIBLE
(TEMISKAMING SHORES AND KIRKLAND LAKE, ON) - The Temiskaming and the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning the public about the dangerous and unacceptable “door-kick challenge” currently trending on social media platforms. Reports indicates that similar incidents have occurred in the region, and police are urging this behaviour needs to stop immediately.
This challenge involves individuals forcefully kicking or striking the doors of homes while recording the act for social media. These incidents can cause significant property damage and fear for the occupants.
Participating in this trend may lead to serious charges under the Criminal Code, including break and enter, mischief to property, causing a disturbance, and trespassing. There is no excuse for this behaviour, and the intent to create a video or participate in a trend does not reduce criminal responsibility. Police are advising individuals to stop participating in this challenge immediately and to understand that entering or attempting to enter someone’s home by force is a crime. Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with youth about the legal consequences and the potential dangers of confronting homeowners.
Homeowners and victims are urged to report all incidents of suspicious activity, property damage, or attempted door-kicking. If it is safe to do so, they should document damage and provide video footage to investigators. Preventive measures such as outdoor lighting, doorbell cameras, or motion-activated devices may help deter future incidents.
The OPP takes these reports seriously and stresses that this behaviour is not a prank, it is a criminal offence that puts both participants and residents at risk. The Temiskaming OPP and the Kirkland Lake OPP will investigate all incidents and lay charges when appropriate.
