POLICE RESPOND TO MULTIPLE SERIOUS COLLISIONS DURING THE CIVIC LONG WEEKEND ACROSS THE GTHA


(AURORA, ON) - Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division (HSD) responded to multiple serious collisions across the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA) throughout the Civic long weekend.   

On Saturday, August 2, 2025, at approximately 1:30 am, a tractor trailer travelling westbound on the Queen Elizabeth Way approaching Christie Street in Grimsby was observed drifting into the right ditch before rolling onto its side. The 67-year-old male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The highway was closed overnight and throughout the next morning for the investigation and recovery of the vehicle.

On Saturday, August 2, 2025, at approximately 8:30 am, a vehicle broke down on the northbound lanes of Highway 404 approaching 16th Avenue. The driver of that vehicle, a 77-year old from Cambridge, was struck in a live lane while outside of his vehicle and was later pronounced deceased.

On Saturday, August 2, 2025, just before 8:00 am, a dump truck was travelling on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 approaching Allen Road. The dump truck experienced a mechanical failure and was subsequently struck by a motorcyclist in a live lane. The rider of the motorcycle, a 60-year-old from Newmarket, was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the dump truck, a 50-year-old from Mississauga, did not report any injuries.

On Saturday, August 2, 2025, just after 10:30 pm, a single vehicle collision occurred on Highway 48 near Sideroad 17 in Brock Township. The 17-year-old driver suffered a life-threatening injury and was transported to hospital. A 20-year-old passenger also suffered minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, August 3, 2025, just before 9:00 pm, a two-vehicle collision occurred on the westbound lanes of Highway 403 beyond Waterdown Road. A vehicle struck a guard rail and road sign before colliding with a second vehicle. The 39-year-old driver of the first vehicle was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Minor injuries were sustained by the five occupants of the other vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, August 3, 2025, at approximately 9:20 pm, officers from the Aurora Detachment of the OPP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 48 between St. John Sideroad and Ballantrae Commons in Ballantrae, Whitchurch-Stouffville. As a result of the incident, a 35-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the scene, and four individuals were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
