(MAPLETON TOWNSHIP, ON) - The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents after a marketplace scam resulted in significant financial loss for a local resident.

At approximately 2:00 pm, on September 11, 2025, the Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a fraud at an address in Mapleton Township.

The investigation determined that the victim was searching for a rental property on an online marketplace. The rental company requested the victim send them $935 via e-transfer before viewing the property, to which the victim complied. The rental company asked for more money, which caused the victim to become suspicious. Upon visiting the rental property, the victim learned through its current residents that the home was not actually for rent.

The victim realized they had been scammed and contacted police.
