Every year, the GSPS Traffic Management Unit participates in Operation Impact over the Thanksgiving long weekend. Operation Impact is a public awareness campaign that focuses on education and enforcement to ensure safe driving. It coincides with Thanksgiving because there tends to be an increase in traffic during long weekends and holidays.

This year’s Operation Impact theme was “Don’t risk lives with bad driving behaviours. Safety is literally in every driver’s hands.”

GSPS Officers took matters into their own hands by laying 77 charges over the long weekend:

  • Speeding – 27
  • Stunt Driving – 3
  • Failing to wear a Seatbelt – 2
  • Careless Driving  - 1
  • Distracted Driving – 13
  • Suspended Driver - 2
  • Driver’s Licence infractions – 4
  • Equipment violations – 7
  • Fail to Stop - Stop Sign – 1
  • No Insurance - 3
  • Impaired (Blood/Alcohol over 80) – 2

  • 3-day suspension – 1
  • 7-day Suspension – 1
  • Cannabis Act (readily available) – 4
  • G1 Alcohol violation – 3

In addition to the above-mentioned charges, Traffic officers also executed an arrest warrant and charged another individual for breaching their release order in relation to an Intimate Partner Violence incident.
