Motorists are reminded that every driver when meeting or approaching from the rear, at a stopped school bus that has its stop arm activated and/or its overhead red signal-lights flashing, drivers shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the stop arm is no longer activated or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.
Motorists are required to stop at least 20 meters before reaching the school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing or that has its stop arm activated.
Drivers and vehicle owners can be charged under the Highway Traffic Act for disobeying these rules and can receive fines starting at $490 plus six demerit points.
Youth are reminded to wait in a safe place away from the edge of the road and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop with its overhead lights flashing or its stop arm activated before approaching the bus. When exiting the bus, always walk and look all ways and wait for the driver to signal before crossing in front of the bus.
