NORTHUMBERLAND OPP WARNS PUBLIC OF FIRE SAFETY SCAM INVOLVING FAKE ALARMS AND CHECKLISTS

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) - The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is alerting residents to a concerning scam involving the sale of smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms that may not meet Canadian safety standards.

Fraudsters are distributing unmarked fire safety pamphlets and fake safety checklists in an attempt to pressure residents into purchasing substandard alarms. These scams are often accompanied by high-pressure sales tactics and requests for cash-only payments.

How to spot the scam:

  • No identifiable business name or contact information
  • Requests for cash-only transactions
  • Use of aggressive or pushy sales tactics
  • Distribution of fake safety checklists or unofficial pamphlets

If something feels suspicious, trust your instincts and carry out some research into the service or product. Do not provide payment or personal information to unknown individuals or businesses.

What to do:

  • Report suspicious activity to your local police station or detachment
