(LAMBTON, ON) - The Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continue to respond to motor vehicle collisions involving deer across the county. Deer become more active during the fall months; drivers should be extra vigilant on the roads.

Lambton OPP urges motorists to take precautions and stay alert for deer crossing the roadways, particularly during dawn and dusk when visibility is reduced, and when deer are most active. Police are reminding drivers of the following tips to help reduce chances of hitting a deer:

• Be Alert: Watch for deer, especially in rural and wooded areas. Deer can be unpredictable. Make sure you slow down if you see one close to the road
• Use High Beams: When possible, use your vehicle’s high beams when there is no oncoming traffic. This will help increase visibility. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near a roadway
• Use Your Horn: If you see a deer, slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away
• Avoid Swerving: Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path. Remain in your lane. Many serious collisions happen when drivers swerve to avoid a deer. Swerving could cause you to lose control of your vehicle or veer into oncoming traffic
• Do Not Rely on Devices: Devices such as deer whistles, deer fences and reflectors to deter deer. Slow down, stay alert, and remain in control of your vehicle
• Keep a Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance between you and other vehicles to allow time to react if a deer suddenly appears
